Hey everyone! Ok I have to admit that I am literally at ground zero all over again. It’s sort of thrilling, but it’s mostly wildly anxiety-inducing. I’m officially leaving my work so that I can find new challenges and opportunities in the area of analytics, business, product, whatever it may be. If I don’t leave … I actually have to return to my former city and I’m just not ready to do that yet.
A part of me dreams to work at a startup but I seriously can’t find a job in this city’s “tech hub”! I could also become a consultant with my own agency and be #locationindependent which is a fairly new fantasy of mine. I’m sad that with all of my skills and abilities, it’s just not enough to become hired. I’ve actually had a few people call me “over qualified” which … just never makes me feel good. That being said, I know finding new work is a very difficult journey or process, especially since I am still fairly junior in my career!
My plan right now is to focus on my skills development but to do so in the context of building projects and finding clients. Right now I have developed this incredible digital marketing and web analytics skillset that I have used to consult B2B and also help built out fully-integrated sites for my B2C business. So I will do some of that.
I think part of being a “techie” means you can pretty much teach yourself anything. My real talent is getting things together, making it happen, and just generally having a very strategic mindset - I see around corner, think proactively, and implement accordingly.
I’ve surprised a lot of people with what I’ve been able to do - and yet I often feel like I know nothing and can’t actually do anything. Welcome to #impostersyndrome? Despite this I’m pretty brazen about ignoring it and going for opportunities. So if anyone else is going through that terrifying place of career change, I’m with you!
Today I am working on my client work, and later I have a meeting with Toronto’s DMZ business accelerator to talk about a lead generation product that uses machine learning. I’ll speak with a consultant there what the business opportunities are, what can be further developed and it’s potential. #tech #dev
