🏖Sand Training Makes You SLOWER!😯 - If you’re looking to train speed, sand training isn’t ideal and may be detrimental to that athletic quality. - However, there are a handful beneficial qualities that can be derived from sand training like I did the other morning. Training on the sand lessens the forceful stress that a hard surface tends to offer. For someone that has struggled with foot, ankle, and shin issues, this is a welcome change of pace from training on hard surfaces. - In addition to having a lower joint impact, sand training has a few other neat benefits: ————————————————— •Training on sand will burn more calories because of the extra work to move your feet out of the sand. •Training on sand may increase the activation of muscles around your feet, ankles, and lower leg. •Training on sand typically requires better coordination and more core activation. •Training on sand is more conducive to barefoot training which allows the proprioception/balance work without too much stress on the feet. - It’s been a nice change of pace on my workouts for me, but if I continued to train this way, I’d actually get slower! While training on sand has all the aforementioned benefits — it reduces elastic responses, decreases stride length, and increases ground contact time which all negatively affect overall speed. As I’ve mentioned before when talking about sprint training, you need to train FAST to get FAST. The neuromuscular facet of sprinting (or any high quality, powerful work) is vastly undervalued by the general population. - - Still had to do some sprints and plyometrics on the beach though… I mean… look at those views!🌅 - Did this work with my new @pierreseliteperformance ankle bands that I’m loving. Then extend the leg in front at the knee and hip upon completion of the drive. The drive phase is a very Important part of the sprint, practice it correctly and watch your acceleration and speed soar!!! + + + 🔽 Force production is another important aspect to generate speed when making contact with the ground. The greater the force you apply into the ground, the greater return of impulse production, which creates greater speed. Longer foot-to-ground contact times will allow for greater force generation and impulse production. 🔽 🔽 🔽 💥💥 The genetic makeup of an athlete may bless him or her with natural speed, but without working on proper sprinting mechanics an athlete will never reach full potential. This means speed can be taught and all athletes have the potential to increase their speed. The Weighted Pen Ultimate Step . . . *Disclaimer* DO NOT Try this exercise if you have not been following an exercise program that has properly prepared you for this exercise from a technique/load standpoint. . . . ▪️Over the course of the last 3 months we have built the athletes ability to properly execute this movement. I personally love this for three very specific reasons. . . ✅ 1. It exposes the athletes weaknesses. Lack of eccentric force, lack of core stability, lack of proper mechanics - whatever the case may be - it’s the ultimate test to see your technique work come to fruition. - ✅ 2. It shows you in real time how energy is truly transferred throughout an athlete’s frame. Knees in, activated glutes, inside edge of foot, and torque. If you try to “muscle” your way on this movement - you will get buried. - ✅ 3. We use this in our last phase of training as our main lower body strength work to help mitigate fatigue, remove the Barbell from training, and allow the athlete to super compensate and “peak” for testing which is next week. . . . Give your more advanced athletes a try and let your coaches eye make your own observations.

Create More Separation with a Negative Step ✖️ . . It’s important to understand context when training for speed and power. Track and Field athletes aside - team sport environments are extremely chaotic in nature. Nothing happens linearly and nothing happens systematically. Sport = Chaos. . . ▪️Knowing this, how can we apply high level principles to team sport settings in a way in which we still get our desired training effect? . . ▪️To tag along yesterday’s post, we often coach from a muscle driven and mechanical standpoint. However, when we look at movement in sport we can deny the underlining, universal principle: ENERGY/FORCE Transfer. In basketball, athletes tend to take a false or “negative” step to help generate more energy moving forward. @barrunning shows plenty of examples of how this holds truth in sport. . . ▪️To build upon this, we use this variation during our power intensification phase where ground contact is shorter, and we’re running at higher velocities. Couple this with introducing new variations that still achieve the same goal. In most instances, athletes will take a false step in live play. . . ▪️Key Takeaway: ✅ Use this variation later in a training block ✅ Use this during higher velocity and distance based sprints. ✅ Use this afternoon building a solid base of technique

Improve Your Power with Internal Rotation of the Hips‼️ . . 🚨Turn Volume Up 🚨 . . We often try to correct what we don’t understand or what we perceive to be “wrong.” Coaches around the world have preached about knees out over toes when it comes to jumping & squatting. However, when you look at two separate factors: Energy Vs. Muscle Paradigm in human movement you will find that one is superior to the other. . . ▪️We we think “movement” we think of weight room room patterning as opposed to athletic performance. A muscle driven movement would tell us to keep our toes and knees out to “engage” our posterior chain. Contrarily, ENERGY is the catalyst for high velocity speeds and power. . . ▪️When looking at Gait mechanics and rotational forces you see how it’s utilized within the human body: . . 1. Inside edge of foot 2. Valgus of the knees (IR Hip) 3. Rotational forces of torso . . A cohesive use of all three of these elements provides an athlete with the best use of his or her power. Look at ANY top level athlete, they all resemble these concepts. . . ▪️The problem arises when you are working with a wide variety of athletes and you must meet their needs. Ask yourself the following: . . ✅ Does this athlete need to be corrected? . ✅ Are they strong enough & need to improve mechanics? . ✅Do they need a layer of strength and should focus on more muscle driven movement? . . ▪️Dint always correct what you see if you don’t understand the full picture. This simple drill by @leetaft allows you to truly see if the athlete possesses enough IR of the hip to move optimally. If the athlete encounter knee valgus WITHOUT internal rotation of the hip - you have an issue. Contrarily, if the athlete has valgus of the knee as a byproduct of IR of the hip - you’re in a good place. Don’t check boxes think deeper. Feedback is the King of Motor Learning.

Single Leg Plyometrics ARE Strength Exercises}} . . . ✅Here’s a supplemental power series I use earlier in the block. More on Single Leg work, the ground contact time is inevitably longer as we know. . . . ✅ However, A single leg plyometric, as shown by [a] motion analysis machine, is so much slower in producing forces…With double leg plyometrics…there is higher potential for developing speed because of the shorter amortization phase, and thus, a more explosive rebound…Single leg plyometrics should be viewed more as a strength plyometric whereas double leg plyometrics develop speed, as stated by Cal Dietz and recent work by my good friend, Cam Josse. . . . ✅ We often assume that single leg training is more “sports-specific,” since most athletic actions occur on a single limb. When speaking strictly kinematically—that is, based on how a movement appears—then yes, that’s true. But when we consider the kinetics of the motions—that is, how the movement was caused in terms of the forces and time frames involved—we start to see that we can’t just look at the appearance of a movement. In order to better determine the desired training effect, we must also consider the physics involved. . . . ✍🏻 That’s why I believe earlier in the block you should use more single leg work to align with your performance work. As the block progresses you want to switch the emphasis to bi-lateral work to match the force curve as well as what happens from a muscular and kinematic standpoint.

{{2PT Hip Shift }} . . ✅ By now you know Speed is the hierarchy of athletic development. However, underneath this umbrella you have separate physical abilities. One is change of direction. The balance in coaching COD is finding what actually happens vs practicing controlled movements in “safe” environments. . . . ✖️ I’m a firm believer in practicing optimal movement patterns in which the athlete understands how to get from Point A to Point B in the shortest amount of time possible. So, how can we achieve this? By rehearsing optimal movements. @leetaft talks about this ALL the time. This is not the ladder, cone drills, or rehearsed movements with no stimulus. These are “live” movements that happen daily in sport. . . ✖️This is an example of a basic hip changing movement we use in phase 1: the developmental phase of our Novice Athlete LP. We keep the movements controlled, less fatiguing, and easier to monitor. As the block progresses we add “chaos” live 1s and live reactive drills. . . . ✍🏻 In this particular video, we’re showing the 2PT Hip Shift. Off the rip, in help athletes shift their hip, and intentionally cross over to cover more ground. When playing denial or help you can “lateral shuffle” you’re man will close the gap and make you pay. By using the 2PT hip shift, you cut off the offensive players path making it easier to recover. It’s also important to note, we work closely with the head coach of BC and understand what defense they want their players to run.

She is doing resisted arm swings, which will force her arms on plain and also force her to swing from her shoulders. + + + One of the first things we attempt to do is get our athletes to begin to recognize the power of the arms and the speed and control that arm movement can bring to the process. + + When the arms are engaged, the body moves faster. But just as important, a powerful arm swing reduces the necessary work and energy of the legs during the running process, which means the body can maintain the running motion longer.
