Sometimes it's a good idea to learn science by just playing around!
I had to take an unplanned lecture for my SYBSc class today. It being the last lecture in their schedule, I decide to do some fun activity:
Each team had to make a paper plane and after testing they had to come with claim why their plane is best.
The key point here is they came up with good features but not the actual figures which in any scientific analysis, a must. For eg: Claiming that the plane has good speed should be supported with the actual data of speed. Same applies to sooooo many other parameters.
This simple activity helps to realize the process behind Evey scientific research:
Selection of testing method
Collection of data and analysis
I am so happy that I could grab this chance and turn it into a fruitful session. Even though I taught something out of the syllabus, it was important and worth. .
PS: I don't claim that the idea of this activity is completely mine. Whatever I have learned and am learning about the subject and teaching-learning, I am just trying to implement and execute.
