The largest white sand desert- Great Rann of Kutch, is acclaimed to be one of the largest salt desert in the world.
For those who don't know,
Rann of Kutch was a part of the Arabian Sea ( just 10kms away from the desert) earlier.
Centuries ago, a earthquake shifted the ground and created a geological uplift, which closed off the connection with the sea leaving it into a navigable lake and salt marsh.
The Ghaggar River which formerly used to empty into the Rann dried up after its tributaries were captured by Indus & Ganges River, thousands of years ago.
It is in average 15 meters above sea level.
In monsoon, the flat desert of salty clay and mudflats, fills with standing water.
The northern boundary of the Greater Rann of Kutch forms the International Border between India and Pakistan, and it is heavily patrolled by India's Border Security Force (BSF).
The district of Kutch is ethically diverse (Hinduism, Islam, Jainism, Buddhism).
It is rich in cultural heritage and is a plethora of art, dance, music, handicrafts.
Rann Utsav was initiated in the year 2006 by the then Chief Minister of Gujarat and now the Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi Ji.
Since then it has gained popularity over the years and has become an attraction for tourists from all over the world.
There are many options for tent stay in areas near the white Rann.
The per night stay varies from Rs3000 - Rs8,000/- INR per night dpending on the distance from the white Rann and the type of tent ( basic, premium , luxury).
When i went there in the month of December, the temperature varied during the day and night and it dropped till 10° degree at night.
As we reached the white desert, we witnessed an array of wonderful folk music which made us swing in it bringing out the true spirit of the area brimming with traditional flavour and hospitality.
