NFL NEWS: 49ers HC Kyle Shanahan said RB Raheem Mostert has “earned” the team’s lead role.
Mostert has flashed at times in his 2 1/2 year stint with the Niners, but he’s really broken onto the scene these past two weeks in fantasy putting up 23.4 and 24.9 PPR Fantasy Points respectively.
Coming into the year as the Niners’ No. 3 back, a mix of injuries and really efficient play has paved the way for Mostert to command more touches. Now he’s in the best position of any Niners back to produce which is something I definitely didn’t foresee at the start of the year.
Tevin Coleman has flashed this year himself and was listed as the starter for most games, but he suffered a high ankle sprain earlier in the year which is a really hard injury on a running back.
I personally believe Matt Breida is the best back of the bunch, but he’s also dealt with his own ankle injuries this year.
I’m not trying to take anything away from Mostert though because he’s been awesome. His 27.9% DVOA, 5.6 True YPC, and 9.8% Big Run Rate all lead the league.
On top of that, his 1.82 Yards Created/Carry ranks 4th best in the league and his +37.9 Production Premium ranks 3rd.
Mostert is extremely explosive with a 4.42 40-yard dash and a 96th percentile Burst Score. When you pair that with a creative running game schemed up by HC Kyle Shanahan and an awesome run blocking unit that’s affording him the 2nd best Run Blocking Efficiency in the league, you get a recipe for running back success.
Every year there’s a fantasy playoff hero that comes out of nowhere and wins people championships. It looks like Mostert is that guy this year, so if you got him, congrats!
That’s not to say there’s not risk with him being in a crowded backfield, but like I said he‘s in the best position of any Niners back to put up good fantasy point totals.
