Ever found yourself and your team in a downward spiral? It can happen to the best of us, but you don’t wanna get stuck in Frown Town. Here’s a way out, that - in my experience - works really well.
1. During Sprint Retrospective, hand the team post-it’s in two colors — let’s say Yellow and Green. On the 💚 green post-it’s, you’ll write concrete, positive actions to do within the team. This could be stuff like a team lunch, to put a Praise Wall in the Team Room or a #Udemy course to watch together. On the 💛 yellow notes, you write positive actions to do outside the team, within the organization to spread those good vibes. Maybe a lunch n’ learn on one of your favourite topics, or a hackathon challenge.
2. Have a short brain storming session (I usually time box these events to a maximum of 5 minutes to keep focus) and write your ideas down on the post-it’s. All ideas are awesome!
3. Make a Positive Actions Backlog out of the post-it’s (you can of course do this on your regular scrum/kanban board if you prefer that, but I think it’s good to keep it separated since it’s not process- or product oriented) and identify some actions that you can do right away. I mean, right away - no delay! Book that lunch n’ learn or sign up for that Udemy course. Put dates on the actions to make them happen, and follow up on the progress. Turn that frown upside down!
