"Insisting that Jack the Ripper killed prostitutes makes the story of a vicious series of murders slightly more palatable. Just as it did in the nineteenth century, the notion that the victims were 'only prostitutes' seeks to perpetuate the belief that there are good women and bad women; madonnas and whores. It suggests that there is an acceptable standard of female behaviour and those who deviate from it are fit to be punished." I finished my first book of 2020 and, to be honest, I'll be surprised if I read anything better this year.
The Five by Hallie Rubenhold was stark, captivating, incredibly detailed, and deeply human. It gave a voice back to the five women at the heart of the Ripper murders, but more than that, gave voice to all Victorian women and beyond, who were victims of an unfair, incredibly biased system that placed little value on them the moment they were born female.
