Plaka Estiatorio in #Ballard, on 20th Ave NW just south of Market, closed June 2019 after 11 yrs of serving #Athenian-style Greek food. It was a family-run biz by Tony Mandapat, Ourania (Nia), Katerina & Yiannis Tziotis (aka “Showtime” -read his great bio at http://greeksinwashington.org/showtime). Brian Boyett, owner of the Ballard Time Shop, was Plakas 1st customer on opening day (#BallardTimeshop had previously been in that space before relocating across the street at 5414 20th Ave NW). No reason was given for Plaka’s closure, & looks like their space is still empty. #PlakaEstiatorio was known for their warm, homey vibe, with Corinthian columns, walls decorated with family/staff pictures, & their lively, open kitchen (they’d all yell out “OPA!” while the flaming Saganaki was cooked). Some of their well-loved dishes included octopus marinated in red wine vinegar & white wine, souvlaki, eggplant casserole & their famous gyros. They also had Greek coffee, beers & retsinas (5 different ones!) #PlakaBallard used imported Greek cheese, pasta, sea salt, extra virgin olive oil, vinegars & fresh locally farmed produce, which won them Seattle Weekly’s “Best Greek” in 2011. They also participated in local festivals like Bite of Greece. From their FB announcement: “It is with deep sadness & heavy heart that we announce the closing of our beloved Plaka Estiatorio on June 30, 2019. Thank you to Ballard for hosting us & our loyal customers which essentially are our extended family members. Your support & love over the last 11 years has been unforgettable! It has been a privilege & honor to serve you while making friendships that will last a lifetime. Each and everyone of you holds a special place in our hearts. We are closing this chapter but hope in the near future to adventure into a new one!...We love you all & cheers to you!”
