Wigan Athletic 1-0 Nottingham Forest

Jamal Lowe’s goal was the difference between the sides as Nottingham Forest’s unbeaten run comes to an end at the hands of Wigan Athletic in the Championship in a game that was very scrappy.
It was all set for Nottingham Forest to go back up into the automatic promotion places with victory against a Wigan side who have had mixed for of late. Forest on the other hand were on an unbeaten run going into this one. But Nottingham Forest struggled to get a foothold in the game which had been made very stop start by the hosts. This seemed to work for Wigan though, as in a fairly uneventful first half the Latics took the lead through Jamal Lowe’s 35th minute goal, on the balanced of play this was probably deserved with Forest lacking a killer edge up front. Wigan hit the post following a free kick late in the first half, which really could have rubbed salt into Nottingham wounds. Away fans I spoke to had bemoaned the decision to bring Bostock into the midfield for this one as the question was being asked “why change a winning team?” No changes for either side at the break seemed a shock from a Nottingham Forest perspective as they were really lacking that something special that could get them back into this game. The game continued as it had done in the first half with both sides sloppy in possession but with Wigan now looking to play on the break. Forest played a lot of football through the middle of the pitch and didn’t get their wide men in the game enough but when they did, they were ineffective. Changes came for Forest looking to freshen things up on the pitch, with Lewis Grabban, Tiago Silva and Joao Carvalho replacing Mir, Bostock and Robinson. Nottingham Forest did create their best chances of the game after the made substations with Lewis Grabban putting a tame header straight at the keeper and Ben Watson dragging a shot wide against his former side. Late on Wigan had a chance to seal the points but Naismith hit the post. However, in the end it wouldn’t matter and the hosts held on to gain three massive points.
